Homestead, FL – During the week of June 26, Br. Peter Nguyen and Br. Joseph Wilkowski helped to run an Inventors’ Workshop at the La Salle Educational Center with the Shining Stars Summer Camp. During the five days, students investigated hydrodynamics (building boats from aluminum foil), structures and bridges (built with spaghetti and mini-marshmallows), energy (building roller coasters), and aerodynamics (building paper airplanes and gliders). One day of the week was devoted to a field trip to a rock climbing facility. There the students investigated gravity in a real way. While Peter demonstrated his prowess as the “Climbing Brother”, Joe supervised one of the climbing stations and decided that he taught enough about gravity in his physics classes to keep his feet on the ground. There were two groups of students, an older group (5th to 7th grade) and a younger group (K to 4). Peter and Joe tag-teamed and designed activities that were appropriate for each group. The enthusiasm and delight in the children’s eyes made the week a real treat.
