It is a time that inspires us to return to the freedom, audacity and creativity of the first mystical experience. We face this moment as a call for a personal and institutional conversion toward the world of the vulnerable and impoverished” (45th General Chapter, 1.15)
Dear Brothers,
In 1714, the Brothers took the bold step of writing a letter to John Baptist de La Salle in which they asked him to return to Paris and resume his leadership of the society. This was done so because it was a moment of great consequence—vulnerability and fragility marked the fledgling community—vocations had declined, and the local Church had begun to challenge the Founder’s charismatic intuition that fraternal and association would be the lifeblood of this new mission.
In 2016 we are experiencing a moment of great consequence and so we assemble in retreat to strengthen our association for the sake of the Lasallian mission. Three major themes will guide our exploration: our present, the past, and future Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The focus of this retreat is neither a glorious and triumphant past nor a sentimental and utopian future. This retreat seeks to face our present “historic moment” and the call to personal and institutional conversion through a contemplative experience of listening, reflecting, journaling, and praying. We will seek to discern what God requires of us at this present moment in our history—a moment of great consequence.
